HVAC upgrades to one of the original buildings on the Pennsylvania State University campus required extending the basement deeper to accommodate large equipment. In order to do this, the “knuckles” of the building required temporary support while new foundations were constructed. McCrossin designed and constructed a micropile supported cantilever underpinning system featuring pairs of micropiles – one in compression and one in tension – connected with a load transfer beam that was connected to the existing structure. The tension micropiles were post-tensioned and the load transfer beam was pre-stressed to minimize movement of the existing structure during the temporary condition.
