Schenley Place
Project Description
Schenley Place, a 105,000-square-foot, seven-story office building with three levels of below ground parking, is located on the corner of Bigelow Boulevard and Ruskin Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA. Burchick Construction subcontracted McCrossin Foundations to install the caisson foundations for the new structure. The caissons were installed in a pit approximately 25 feet below the roadway elevation with space being at a premium.
In total, 50 caissons were installed, ranging from 30 to 60 inches in diameter. Due to an extremely wet and sandy top layer of soil, oversized outer casing and appropriately sized inner temporary casing were required to maintain a safe, open hole. To meet schedule constraints, work was performed over an extremely cold winter, adding to the challenges of this project.
